Retro Road Trip

Retro Road Trip

In a Rental Home

Perhaps Dodge, speaking of the Caliber's creature comforts, says it best: “You’ll feel like you’re in the comfort of your own home—if your house could drive down the road.”

An Outback's creature comforts proved pleasant as well and this Avis rental car soon became a rental home on the road to reflective urban camping adventures in Arizona--including a long-awaited return to My Island.

While some unexpected feelings upon returning to certain old areas left me dazed and re-thinking my madness, others made me laugh (or cry)--and still do.

Without further ado let's dive into the heart of the trip where it all started years ago as my favorite swimming hole and eventually became 'My Island Oasis'.

At this very spot I recall saying to a friend--'I could live here!' (I had no idea how prophetic my words were). When the opportunity arose, I seized it, and dove into world of adventure only intimate experience can truly tell. Thus, you can imagine the excitement I felt approaching my island, after a two year absence.

Cool, refreshing waters once again eased every part of me as I enjoyed the eddy a few times. Yet, solid soil awaited and my curiosity was too strong to swim long. Hence, I headed through the tight plant passage into the open where my old sleeping area awaited. I crossed the large river rocks to get a closer look, delighted at the health and vigor of the Goodings Willow. I crouched at the entrance bordered by a tall tamarisk and came face to face with a funnel weaver.

The adept web weaver showed little fear and being directly in the entrance to my old stomping grounds, we had to talk. After a rather one-sided conversation, we concluded this rump rest is better suited for him. We all have selected surroundings which sustain us. Though we traverse territories at times--life is best-lived in our appointed place.

But it sure is fun to visit!
