An Awaiting Eddy
Softly in Circles
My Island Eddy
With close to an inch between body and earth, zebra-tailed lizards dash across the desert carpet. Majestic saguaros welcome respectful visitors, while a warning rattle from a nearby diamondback cautions company. Feather-like mesquite leaves brush my side as I approach the earth’s edge…
A sweeping slope guides my eye to an island oasis generating a mix of emotions: satisfaction and sorrow, victory and defeat, conquest and surrender. As I descend a blue heron spreads its massive wings and gracefully flies upstream. I gladly take its place with a refreshing dive and vigorous swim to an awaiting eddy.
Swaying to the water’s rhythm, an asparagus fern waves, as do I to a relaxing backstroke. A few feet up dragonflies dart to and fro making sharp, swift u-turns. Soft pink tamarisk blossoms swing in the gentle breeze while sunshine shimmers on the surface. Chills of peace envelope me as I float softly in circles soaking in the beauty of life in harmony with all creation--including a harris hawk floating softly in circles through the open endless air.
